History

Curriculum Intent

History at the Lowry Academy enables students to understand the local area and how its history has been shaped by wider influences, and how wider influences have shaped the local area, by exploring a range of periods, people and places from the past. Our curriculum is knowledge rich allowing our students to develop a coherent, chronological understanding of Britain’s place in the world.

We also intend for our students to not just become better at remembering and retaining information, but also become better at history as a discipline; to become historians, ensuring students' progress in their understanding of concepts such as causation, change and continuity, and how historians work with historical evidence to create their interpretations of the past. Students will also develop a sophisticated and nuanced understanding of substantive concepts so they can understand the world around them, with concepts such as ‘authority’, ‘trade’ and ‘empire’, appearing in various contexts throughout our curriculum.

Curriculum Overview

Year 7

The aim of Year 7 is to build up students understanding of religion, authority and power and the relationship between the monarchy and people, all of which are built on in Year 8.

Year 8

In Year 8, we look at the changing nature of religion in the Reformation, and the religious turmoil that followed, before looking at the changing relationship between King and Parliament as a result of the English Civil War.

Year 9

Year 9 aims to allow students to know how the modern world has been shaped, through a study of both world wars, the fight for women's suffrage, and also the increase in diversity in Britain post-WW2.

Year 10

In Year 10, students follow the Edexcel GCSE specification. We begin looking at Anglo-Saxon and Norman England, before looking at Medicine Through Time, 1250-present. We have selected these topics to be taught in chronological order to allow our students to make sense of the way the world has progressed throughout time.

Year 11

In Year 11, students follow the Edexcel GCSE specification. We begin looking at Weimar and Nazi Germany, before looking at Superpower Relations and the Cold War, 1941-91. We have selected these topics to be taught in chronological order to allow our students to make sense of the way the world has progressed throughout time.
