Curriculum Intent

Drama is to provide all students with the ability to collaborate, communicate and develop performance etiquette both in lesson and in the wider world. Students enhance and expose their creative minds to express social, emotional and cultural contents within the curriculum. That through different elements of our curriculum students explore areas of interest. At Key Stage 4, our students engage in workshops, which are delivered by professional artists in the industry, and are introduced to pieces of live theatre throughout their two-year course. The key moments in the students experience and development of a historical context in Drama is taught through practical exploration of text.

Curriculum Overview

Year 7

In Drama, the Year 7 curriculum is focussed around drama studio etiquette as this is a new discipline to most. Year 7’s gain an understanding of the basic drama skills that will help them build technical knowledge needed to progress at Key Stage 3. This will help them progress as a young performer and take responsibility in their own learning. Our lessons encourage our students to think and act creatively to develop critical thinking that can be applied in all areas of learning.

Year 8

Year 8’s are introduced to theatre practitioners such as: Fanatic Assembly through the exploration of physical theatre and their technique of building blocks to develop theatre from its most simplest form and Jacques Lecoq who is a French theatre practitioner who focuses on the dramatic tension in a performance. During Year 8 students are able to express themselves creatively and to develop confidence in their verbal and physical skill. They will instil respect and discipline in each other in their work and performances as well as appreciating and respecting drama styles and stimuli from all backgrounds.

Year 9

The Year 9 Drama curriculum allows our students to pursue dramatic talent, strive for excellence in performance and develop a passion for drama through an engaging curriculum. The Year 9 drama curriculum encourages determination: to persevere and strive when rehearsing, refining and improving performances. Students are required to apply new vocabulary and terminology, as well as old, in their responses to stimuli and the taught drama skills, both oral and written. As students are able to reflect on their work and can now understand how to develop their skills set.

Year 10

At Key Stage 4 we study the GCSE Drama course through Eduqas (WJEC). This course gives a deeper understanding and knowledge of performance and is explore through three components over the two years at Key Stage 4.

Component 1: Devising Theatre worth 40% of the course

Component 2: Performing from a Text worth 20% of the course

Component 3: Interpreting Theatre worth 40% of the course

Year 11
